primary bone tumors, patients under 20 years of ageAbstract
Although malignant bone tumors have a marginal incidence in our setting, knowledge that enables early detection and timely management is of prognostic importance.
The purpose of this study is to describe the local experience with this pathology and establish comparisons with findings reported worldwide.
This is a retrospective study involving 79 patients under 20 years of age diagnosed with primary malignant bone tumors. Ten cases without biopsy confirmation were excluded from the study.
There were 54 osteosarcomas, 11 Ewing's sarcomas, 3 giant cell tumors, and 1 chondrosarcoma. Only 4 % of the patients remained alive and disease-free for two years, a proportion below the 20 % reported in international experience. However, no significant differences were found between these findings and the published literature.
